MEET THE CAST: Introducing Chris, played by Joshua Weigel

He plays the local youth worker who wants to be there for the kids in his community, but after a student takes his own life Chris wonders if he's doing any good. We talked with the real guy behind the character. He's cool, too.

Q. What was it like being in TO SAVE A LIFE?
A: I was grateful to be given the role of Chris Vaughn since he was a character I easily related to having been a youth worker in the past. It was also sobering to play a character who could easily send an audience reeling if I ended up portraying their worst nightmare of the "church guy." But I was also eager to take on a character who was questioning many of the same things I am and to find some way through the experience to help encourage dialogue about some of the shortcomings we all face when we're just trying to do the right thing.

Q. What was your favorite scene?
A: The scene where I find Jake in his truck outside the church is probably the most relevant to me. I remember my future hanging in the balance of a decision. I've had so many conversations with people who also seemed to be on the verge of choices that could completely change their lives and you just want them to somehow understand or learn from where you've been. But in the end we have to watch them go through the process whether it ends up OK or not.

Q. The movie deals with some serious themes, including relationships, family breakdown, suicide, cutting, teen alcohol abuse, and faith? Did you connect personally with any of them?
A: Relationships, family, and faith are all issues that have presented various challenges at different times in my life. These are the areas that we hope for stability or predictability the most, but for so many of us they usually seem to end up anything but that. My parents divorced after 25 years of marriage. There are always pressures to deal with in relationships, and a life in God has proved to be far more then formulas. But I'm learning to enjoy the fact that these experiences are essential to our growth and journey in this life.

Joshua Weigel's previous work includes roles in national commercials and Snare (2007), as well as producer, director, and writer of Stained (2008), Liv (2009) and The Butterfly Circus (2009), which was the winner of the Doorpost Film Project and the largest Grand Prize for a short film in 2009. The Butterfly Circus is currently in development as a major motion picture.
